Official opening of The Broadway and Nelson Plaza

Broadway Opening Parade and Competion Winner Mr Hubbard

The official opening of a section of the refurbished Golden Mile was marked by a civic procession and a renaming ceremony. £2.5 million was spent on the seafront regeneration which includes a new slow lane designed for horse drawn landaus and road trains.

The Broadway was opened with a customary ribbon cutting by the Mayor Cllr Paul Garrod and the winner of the naming competition Mr R Hubbard of Eccles. Local man, Mr Roy Stenhouse of Apsley Road suggestion for Nelson Plaza was chosen for the open area in front of the Hollywood Cinema.  Mr Stenhouse’s son Jimmy was delighted to collect a certificate on behalf of his father who was on holiday.

Leader of the borough council, Cllr Barry Coleman praised the quality of the work and said “I firmly believe that Great Yarmouth deserves the very best. These improvements are a long-term investment and will be not only be good for tourism but for business, jobs and the people who live here.”

The parade was fronted by TS Fearless, Winter Marine Cadets colour party band followed by the Mayor and Mayoress, local and county councillors, council officers and representatives from the contractors May Gurney. Local school children from Homefield First School, Bradwell and Greenacre First, Middle and Nursery Schools, Great Yarmouth followed in the decorated road trains.

The works also include landau waiting shelters, a new toilet block for drivers, a broad pedestrian walkway, single carriageway road layouts and new lighting.
