Snow Halts Refuse Collections
PR 139
1 March 2006
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
On the grounds of health and safety Great Yarmouth Borough Council suspended domestic waste and recycling collections on Wednesday March 1, because of icy conditions following a fall of snow.
“It was not felt that it was safe for our crews to be working in such slippery conditions,” said Graham Jermyn director of GYB Services the company that carries out the collections.
“The issues included the safe removal of the bins by our operatives, as well as their and the public’s safety in manoeuvring 30 ton collection vehicles on streets with narrow openings.
GYB Services is monitoring weather conditions. Collections are scheduled to begin again on Thursday, picking up the rota where it was interrupted. With the result that most people’s bins will be emptied one day late.
The crews will work on Saturday, if necessary, to catch up so that collections next week should not be affected.
“We are sorry for the inconvenience of the temporary break in service, but hope that residents will appreciate the weather conditions made it impossible for our crews to operate as normal,” added Graham.
Friday will see an inspection by the Council of its play pitches to see if they are suitable for Saturday games.
Snow was cleared to allow the bereavement service to operate as normal at the crematorium.
