Biting into Red Nose Day

Duncan Mallett and Jo Keel will be dreaming about lunchboxes after providing more than 100 to raise money for the BBC Comic Relief appeal.

Market Manager Duncan and Human Resources Assistant Jo will get up at 4am on the morning of March 16 to produce the lunchboxes for colleagues at Great Yarmouth Borough Council.

The couple started raising funds for Red Nose Day 12 years ago when they produced 30 filled rolls. Every Comic Relief appeal has seen the menu and the orders grow.

Now they provide fruit, crisps, a red nose cake and rolls with fillings as varied as stilton and apple, prawns and mayo, or smoked salmon, cream cheese and watercress.

There is even a free raffle ticket with the chance to win an Easter Egg.

The last Red Nose Day in 2005 saw the couple put together 120 lunchboxes and raise £600 for the charity.

While in November, they baked 160 muffins including a smoked cheese and red onion savoury version to raise £225 for Children in Need.

“Duncan is a great cook so we thought we could use our combined talents to raise money for the charities,” said Jo.

“Although we get as far forward with making the fillings for the lunch boxes the night before as we can, it’s still an early start on the day.

“We provide lunches for people in the Town Hall and offices throughout the Borough. They seem to go down well as more and more people every year want to take part.”

“Our target this year is to make £1,000,” said Duncan, “and hopefully when we have collected all the donations we will do just that.

“We would also like to thank Asda supermarket and Royles Driving Tuition for their sponsorship towards the ingredients.”
