The Big Picture event on Great Yarmouth beach which attracted more than 400 people to spell out the initials GYP - was the catalyst for the creation of nearly 70 works of art.
Great Yarmouth Borough Council’s Housing Department had a stand at an accompanying event in the Marina Centre. The Big Picture was aimed at encouraging greater community participation, and offering help and advice on issues such as crime prevention, health and housing.
“We were offering advice on some of the Council’s housing schemes such as the landlord accreditation scheme, Homeselect, Safe at Home and Yare Care,” said Diane Gilbert, Manager Housing and Social Policy. “Which cover aspects as broad as helping landlords provide a good standard of accommodation, tenants to find homes, being secure in your home and our emergency call system.
“All of which isn’t very interesting to the younger people who had come along with their parents. So we invited the young people to draw us a picture of This is Where We Would Like to Live.
“It attracted 67 entries. The winner in the under 10 category was six-year-old Cara Standlumbe and 11-year-old Burak Bektas won the older children’s prize.
“Both of the youngsters went home with an Easter egg. The pictures were wonderful and it was a very hard choice - I wouldn’t have minded living in some of the houses myself.”
