Great Yarmouth's Streets are Spick and Span

PR 177

10 May 2006

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

A report published by the GMB trade union on May 9 heralds Great Yarmouth as having some of the cleanest streets in East Anglia.

The survey is based on information supplied by the Audit Commission for the year 2004/5. It records the percentage of streets which are judged as dirty.

Huntingdon was top of the poll with 7 per cent, while Great Yarmouth came in very creditable third with 10 per cent among the 19 local authorities that were assessed.

“We work hard to keep the streets of Great Yarmouth clean,” said Graham Jermyn Director for GYB Services, the organisation that works in partnership with the Borough Council.

“The introduction of wheeled bins is having an impact on the litter on the street and we are reviewing and changing cleansing regimes to reflect this.

“We have our own teams who regularly remove fly tipping, clean the streets both mechanically and with the good old fashioned broom.

“A newly created Dynamic Emergency Response Team (DERT) is working closely with local neighbourhoods and communities to respond as quickly as possible to reported problems.  Known problem areas are targeted by ourselves and officers of the Borough Council to remove rubbish quickly and find long term solutions.

“Dedicated teams in areas such as Middlegate have made a massive difference to the appearance of the estate. The improvements being made are a tribute to all those groups, organisations and individuals who are working together with the single aim of improving the local environment.

“There is more to do but it is gratifying to be featured in a report like this where an outside body is highlighting the hard work put in by so many of our employees.”

For further information call Graham Jermyn Director for GYB Services on 01493 846465.

If members of the Press or media would like to see street cleansing in action they are welcome to make an appointment through Graham or Street Scene Inspector Terry Bensley on 01493 846452.
