What a Waste of Time

PR 180

17 May 2006

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Removing flytipping from Kent Square has become almost a daily occurrence for Great Yarmouth Borough Council.

“We are waging a constant battle to keep this particular area free from rubbish,” said Head of Environment and Health John Hemsworth.

“GYB Services, who has the task of removing the rubbish, has been clearing up to half a lorry-load of waste at a time.

“The area, which is just behind Maritime House, is now targeted by the multi-agency Waste Environment Group for surveillance.

“We want to catch the people who are doing this, we know much of the rubbish is commercial waste, and local businesses are already being visited to check their waste removal arrangements. Letters are also being sent to local residents.

“It wastes a great deal of time and resources collecting the rubbish when there are legitimate and legal schemes to deal with commercial and domestic waste.

“Tragically much of the rubbish we are picking up could be recycled which would free-up space in the perpetrators bins, so the need to carry out this kind of action wouldn’t be necessary.

“I would also like to remind people that it is a criminal offence to dump waste which carries a maximum fine of £50,000. If anyone has any information on fly tippers please will they call the Environmental Health team on 01493 846478.

For further information contact Head of Environment and Health, John Hemsworth on 01493 846458.
