Peggotty Road Multi-Sports Area

PR 183

24 May 2006

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Following ongoing problems of anti-social behaviour caused by the use of Peggotty Road Multi-Sports Area late into the night, the Borough Council has decided to lock the facility from 10 pm every evening for the foreseeable future.

Simon Mutten, Environmental Strategy Manager for the Borough Council, said: “Unfortunately there has been a long term problem whereby neighbours of the games area have been constantly disturbed by balls being kicked into their garden and some harassment has occurred.

“The Council has spent a considerable amount of effort in trying to alleviate this problem, including the installation of high fencing to the perimeter. Sadly, this has not deterred the ongoing anti-social behaviour involved with the site.

“The floodlights are timed to go off at 10 pm, but people still remain afterwards playing late into the night and disturbing the residents. After consulting with the residents and the police, the only solution is to restrict the use of the site by closing it from 10pm onwards each evening.

“We hope these measures will resolve the situation for the benefit of all. The area is covered by CCTV and we shall be monitoring the situation with a view to further action should the problems continue.”

Signs will be erected at the site advising users of the new arrangements.
