Lighting up the Summer Sky the Environmentally-Friendly Way
PR 184
24 May 2006
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
When the decorative lights are switched on at Gorleston’s Lower Esplanade on Friday (26) they will twinkle brighter than usual – while consuming far less energy thanks to a Great Yarmouth Borough Council environmentally-friendly strategy.
The 15 watt tungsten bulbs are being replaced with 0.6 watt light emitting diodes (LED) which will not only use 95 per cent less electricity, they will give more light and they will be flashing!
“The festoons which hold the lights were replaced last year,” explained Environmental Strategy Officer Michael Stephenson. “The Council’s strategy is that from now on as whole lighting displays are replaced, the bulbs used will be low-energy LED lights.
“The LED lights have a much linger life span than the tungsten version, and they are much cheaper to run. The old lights used 2,898 kilowatts of electricity during the summer season the new will use just 122 kilowatts.
“In money terms this brings the bill down from £174 to £7.32.
“The next scheduled display to be replaced is the Christmas lights in King Street.”
The seafront lights will be brightening Gorleston evenings until November 1.
