Come and Get Active X on Gorleston Beach

May 8 is a red letter day for sports fan young and old as they are invited to try everything from kiting to Tai Chi, beach football and cricket - free!

Gorleston beach is the venue for a programme of sport from Active X a new organisation, formed with help from Awards for All Lottery funding, to give residents in the Borough of Great Yarmouth access to the sport and recreation opportunities they requested through community partnership meetings.

Flushed with success and help from the Borough Council, Active X has converted a disused toilet block into a club house, teaching room and showers so that people from the age of six can take part in a multitude of sports including beach rugby and football.

“This is a one year pilot,” said Marten Payne for Active X. “We have a 3.5 mile stretch of beach and plan to introduce up to 25 different activities over the next few months.

“We would be pleased if you join us on Tuesday May 8 to sample for yourselves what we have to offer. From 4pm for three hours you can have a free taste of everything from kite buggy to ultimate Frisbee or beach tag rugby.”

The Mayor of Great Yarmouth Councillor Sue Robinson will perform the opening ceremony at 4pm - then experts from all the disciplines represented will be on hand to give taster sessions.

People who sign up to the actual classes will pay just £2 an hour for most of the activities. Signing up for membership (just £10 per month) gives access to all time-tabled classes and sessions.

Details of the full summer-long programme can be found on the Council’s website www.great-yarmouth.gov.uk and www.active-xsports.org.

The project has the backing of Sport England, Great Yarmouth and Waveney PCT and Great Yarmouth Sports Partnership.
