PR 282For Immediate Release
8 November 2006
A sight which gladdened the hearts of motorists on Pasteur Road, Great Yarmouth, will be twice as good next spring.
Last November GYB Services, which tends the gardens for Great Yarmouth Borough Council, was instrumental in having 100,000 crocus corms planted on part of the central reservation toward the north end of the road.
A little drop of spring sunshine saw them burst into bloom earlier this year. The effect was so stunning that GYB Services repeated the operation last Friday (November 3) and added another 100,000 corms.
Amsterdam based Lubbe Wisse again supplied and planted the corms. They picked up from where they stopped last year planting towards the direction of the Haven Bridge
“For many years crocuses were a common sight around that part of the town, but they disappeared with road alterations,” explained GYB Services Operations Manager Bob Allen.
“We decided last year to restore the plants many times over - and what a reaction we got from people who saw them.
“Next spring the display will be even better.”
The planting took just under an hour. The machine uses two small plough shares to part the turf, then the corms are gently dropped from a hopper into 2 inch deep groves in the earth. The turf is replaced by rollers as the vehicle moves forward.
Now it’s all down to Mother Nature.
