Government Funding For Flood Risk Assessment In Great Yarmouth
PR 283For Immediate Release
8 November 2006
The effects predicted in a report published yesterday on tidal flooding had already been foreseen by Great Yarmouth’s Borough Council and its MP.
A report issued by the Association of British Insurers (ABI) predicted that if the sea level rises by 40cm by 2040, 17,500 properties in Great Yarmouth and Waveney could be flooded.
The ABI Coastal Flood Risk - Thinking for Tomorrow, Acting Today report came a week after Great Yarmouth MP Tony Wright and the Council’s Deputy Chief Executive Mark Barrow met top level officials at Westminster.
The meeting on November 1 brought together Ian Pearson Minister of State for Climate Change and Environment, Sarah Nason Head of DEFRA’s Flood Management Division, and Paul Woodcock the Environment Agency’s Regional Director Anglian.
“As the ABI report highlights, the east coast needs more investment in sea defences,” said Mark Barrow. “Our discussion with the Minister has seen the Government agree to fund a study into the long-term investment needed for Great Yarmouth.
“The study is set to begin in the New Year, and based on its findings we will know what is required, and the level of funding needed to carry out the work.
“We have long-term plans for the regeneration of the Borough and we want to provide a reassurance to our residents, and ensure that it remains a good place to invest in.”
“It is clear from the meeting that the issue of flooding is being taken seriously by the Government and the agencies involved,” said Tony Wright. “I welcome the initiative to fund the study.”
