We did Blooming Well!

PR 271

For Immediate Release

18 October 2006

Residents in two sheltered housing developments are celebrating their winning ways in the Great Yarmouth and Gorleston in Bloom competition.

Cherry Road, Gorleston, gained silver and was proclaimed winner of the Community project, while also gaining bronze in the Best Street/Road category, not to mention a certificate from Anglia in Bloom for the Community Project category.

Wherry Way, in Great Yarmouth, saw its first attempt at entering the Great Yarmouth and Gorleston in Bloom result in silver awards in both the Best Street/Road and Best Community Project classes.

“We are so proud of everyone they have worked so hard,” said Senior Warden Margaret Mollett. “Some of the residents at Cherry Road grow the plants that make up the displays so this is a great way of recognising what they have achieved.

“And as for Wherry Way, residents were given plants and hanging baskets by the organisers of In Bloom and they have more than repaid the kindness by their results.”

Taking a pride in the gardens at Cherry Road has seen the elderly residents work together to plant out beds, hanging baskets and containers. Basil Field and Stan Brown grow the bedding plants in a greenhouse which was bought earlier this year through fund raising events.

Their success in earlier years, both in their displays and in gaining prizes in the In Bloom competitions, inspired Wherry Way residents to try their hand.

In Bloom delivered more than 20 hanging baskets, compost and plants which saw Sylvia Bristow and Lily Hall in their element leading the planting. Their efforts were echoed by Malcolm Dixon who takes great pride in planting and tending the communal garden.

The culmination of their hard work was attending the In Bloom awards at the Town Hall on October 6 to hear their praises sung.

“The best thing to come out of the whole competition is that residents on two more of our sites want to join in next year,” added Margaret.
