Awards to Recognise Unsung Heroes in the Town
People in Great Yarmouth are being asked to nominate someone who has shown outstanding commitment and dedication to the benefit of the citizens within the Borough.
The nominations are for the ‘Susan Robinson Civic Awards’ – an award for the people of Great Yarmouth, formerly known as the Civic Awards and renamed in memory of Councillor Susan Robinson, who sadly died in August of this year.
Barry Coleman, Leader of the Borough Council, spoke about what the awards meant to Councillor Robinson. “Sue repeatedly said during her year as Mayor that one of her proudest moments was launching the Civic Awards. It is very fitting that the Borough Council decided to rename the Civic Awards in her memory.
“The idea of these awards is to thank all those unsung heroes in the Borough who devote their time in helping others without any financial reward for themselves. We would also like nominations for people who have achieved sporting, business and personal success and those who have overcome exceptional difficulties. “
The categories are:-
Young Citizen of the Year – A young person under the age of 18 who has made a significant contribution to the Borough, or achieved educational success and/or overcome personal difficulties.
Community Award – A community group/organisation that has made a significant improvement to the area in which they live, or who have made a specific achievement to the benefit of others within the Borough.
Lifetime Achievement – A person who has gone the extra mile and provided an excellent contribution, dedication and service to the Borough.
Sport & Culture – A person who has excelled at sports, arts and culture which has brought credit to themselves or the Borough.
Business of the Year Award – A company big or small that has achieved outstanding success and shown their support to the Borough
Environment Awareness Award - A person that has significantly made a improvement to the environment be it a project or individual achievement.
Carer Award – A person who has shown outstanding commitment and support and improved another person’s life.
Voluntary Award – A person who has given their time freely to help others.
Susan Robinson Special Award – An individual who has overcome exceptional difficulties, or has shown bravery and courage.
To be eligible for a nomination, a person should have lived within the Borough of Great Yarmouth for a minimum of two years prior to the 31 January 2008.
Nominations should be made no later than 1 February. Each nomination should be from a proposer who is not related to the person being nominated.
A panel of judges, which will include the Mayor, Councillor Paul Garrod will meet in February. Successful nominations will then be notified and invited with guests to a civic reception to be held at the Town Hall in March.
