Healthy Walks in Great Yarmouth
Walking is good for everyone – and last Wednesday a group of eighteen blind and visually impaired people ‘plus a guide dog’ and seven volunteer guides, braved the rather ‘keen’ easterly winds, to enjoy a stroll from the waterways at North Denes to the harbour’s mouth.
Vaughn Read, the Sport and Leisure Co-ordinator of the Norfolk & Norwich Association for the Blind said: “Such outings are an essential part of a blind persons programme to maintain good health and importantly, avoid isolation. The walks provide an opportunity for social interaction on a regular basis.”
A brief stop for refreshments was very welcome; followed by a talk given on the outer harbour development by Douglas Bradley from Caister, which was very interesting and informative. The walk was completed by a traditional fish and chip lunch at Harry Ramsdens Restaurant on Marine Parade.
Some of the group had also been on a lovely walk along the seafront at Gorleston on Tuesday. Twelve visually impaired people and four volunteer guides walked the length of the lower promenade and back. On return they had a hot drink at one of the cafes. In contrast to Wednesday’s walk the day was cool, though bright and sunny.
We would like to extend our thanks to the Borough Council’s Dynamic Environmental Response Team (DERT) operated by GYB Services, for coming along and checking in advance of the walks that everywhere was clean and there was no glass or obstacles to impede the walk for us or the guide dog.
