Recycling Opportunities at Christmas Time

Although recycling is something we can all do throughout the year, at Christmas, there are even more opportunities to become involved in recycling household waste.

At this years Christmas Fayre, Recycling Officers from Great Yarmouth Borough Council and Recycle for Norfolk will be holding a stall in the Market Place from Friday 30 November to Sunday 2 December.

Cabinet Member for the Environment, Councillor James Shrimplin encourages residents to recycle, he said: “It is very important that everyone continues to increase the amount of waste that they recycle in order to meet the stringent targets that have been set by Government, for unless we continue to meet and exceed them financial penalties will be imposed upon us. Also, we can no longer bury refuse at the current rate because of the unacceptable effect it is having on the environment"

Officers will be on hand to help with any recycling queries, such as what to put in your green bin, and provide additional information on facilities around the Borough. Rob Cole, Environmental Strategy Officer for Waste and Recycling explained how to become involved: “At Christmas the average family generates about one third extra waste but a great deal of this can be recycled.  I would encourage everyone to pop along to the Christmas Fayre, have a chat and find out about all the recycling opportunities available throughout the borough.”

There will also be lots of waste saving tips to use over the Christmas period and into the New Year including making cards into gift tags, gift ideas, reusable shopping bags, Christmas recycling information booklet and many other helpful hints and tips.

Christmas can also put additional strain on black household waste bins so it’s as important as ever to recycle as much as possible. There are even more opportunities to recycle with all the additional cans and plastic drink bottles. Glass is often overlooked but with over 60 bottle banks in the Borough there is generally one nearby and it keeps this valuable resource out of landfill.
