Lights Fantastic

Local residents and members of the Cleaner, Safer, Greener Partnership Board (the board that was given the responsibility for finding projects to allocate the Government’s Cleaner, Safer, Greener funding), assembled at the town’s St. George’s park last Tuesday, 2 October to watch the trial of the new up-lighters.

The purpose of the lighting scheme is to illuminate the special features of the park, including established greenery.  It will also enhance safety in the park, especially during the evening, complimenting other crime prevention methods and encourage all sections of the community to access the park.

The lights are interactive and will ‘change colour’ as people enter the park.  They can also be programmed to change colour in alternate sequences or remain in one colour only; for instance, allowing colour changes between red and green over the Christmas festive season, which will prove particularly popular with younger members of the community.

Councillor James Shrimplin, portfolio holder for the environment, said: “I have spoken to several residents who had concerns over the possible intrusion of the lights on their properties and believe that most, if not all, have been allayed.  I look forward to the completion of the scheme, which will be a ‘fantastic’ improvement for the area and the town.”

The project is progressing well and the new networks of paths are near completion.  New playground equipment will be installed and a large amount of soft landscaping is to be introduced including: mature trees, shrubs and floral displays.

Planned works in respect to the highways are imminent and will include: Trafalgar Road and St. Georges Road
