The Borough Council has received a report of an abnormal number of dead birds being washed up on Great Yarmouth’s south beach. DEFRA has been informed and have picked up a number of carcasses from the beach for investigation; however we do not know what has caused the deaths as yet.

As a precautionary measure, notices will be placed at the entrances to the beach warning the public not to touch dead birds but to report them to Environmental Health on 01493 846478 or DEFRA on 08459 335577, website www.defra.gov.uk.  The public are also being asked to keep animals away from carcasses.

GYB Services are also carrying out regular sweeps of the beach until further notice. These measures are purely precautionary until the results of DEFRA’s investigations are known.
