English Heritage Praise Great Yarmouth
A new report and conference has put the spotlight on seaside architecture and its role in the regeneration of Great Yarmouth.
‘Regeneration in Historic Coastal Towns’ is a new set of guidelines set by English Heritage, who has chosen Great Yarmouth to show how a town’s heritage can be instrumental to the regeneration of a seaside town.
Great Yarmouth is highlighted in the report because it demonstrates how local authorities have tackled areas of the town that have fallen into a ‘poor state of repair’, by using their built heritage and taking an entrepreneurial approach to conservation and restoration finance.
Stephen Earl, the Council’s Conservation and Heritage Manager said:” We are pleased that Great Yarmouth has been highlighted as a case study in a national report.”
Through creative partnerships with private building trusts and housing associations, funds were secured for the conversion of buildings for leasing as residential units and communal resource centres. A heritage strategy was also developed to regenerate the historic core of the town.
