Next Phase of Great Yarmouth Seafront Improvements

With the next phase of improvements on Great Yarmouth’s Golden Mile due to begin at the end of September, an exhibition of the project plans will be on view at the Marina Centre from Monday (Sept 10th).

The improvements, funded by Great Yarmouth Borough Council, will be managed and constructed by Norfolk County Council and its partners Mott MacDonald and May Gurney. The project will extend the improvements of earlier phases* southwards along Marine Parade. This will include the 'Broadway' slow lane, used by horse-drawn landaus, cyclists and the road train, as well as the revised road layout and high-quality paving and street furniture.

The scheme ends just south of the junction with King's Road, where a new roundabout will make turning easier, and will lower traffic speeds. The improvements will complete the link between the Britannia and Wellington piers and represent another major step in the regeneration of the sea front.

Work on this phase is due to start towards the end of September and carry on through the winter. Some design features on the revised scheme are still being developed, but the total cost of the work will be within £2.5 million.

The exhibition at the Marina Centre includes plans of the work already underway at St Georges Park to bring the park up to 'Green Flag' standard. As well as changes in the park itself, the road layout and connections with surrounding green spaces will be improved. Most of the work on the park is being paid for through a £2.1 million award to Great Yarmouth Borough Council under the Cleaner, Safer, Greener Communities Initiative, with a further contribution from the County Council. The work is being carried out by May Gurney under its strategic partnership with Norfolk County Council.

The Marine Parade Phase 3 and St Georges Park exhibition will be at the Marina Centre from Monday 10th September and run until Friday 5th October.  The exhibition will be manned on Monday and Tuesday mornings from 9.30 to 1.00pm, with extended hours on Tuesday 18th September when it will be manned all day from 9.00 – 7.00pm.

*Previous phases have included the improvement of Regent Road to create a high quality pedestrian link from the town centre to Brittania Pier, including the new Nelson Plazza. This phase came under the InteGreat partnership.

The second phase, carried out last winter, began to extend the improvements along the seafront, including shelters for waiting landaus and the first section of the new 'Broadway' slow lane.
