No valid tax disc will have a crushing effect in display

Car Crusher

Tax dodging drivers will wince as cars are cubed as part of an event to persuade motorists that not having a valid road fund licence could have a crushing effect.

To be held on Great Yarmouth Market Place, on Thursday September 4, Great Yarmouth Borough Council’s Car Clear Partnership, Norfolk Constabulary, the DVLA and DLH Auto-recyclers will be driving home the point that trying to motor illegally just doesn’t pay.

Car Clear has recently been putting into use powers given it by the DVLA to remove untaxed cars from the roadside. Vehicle owners can see their auto being towed away in less than an hour after Car Clear is notified of its existence.

The Market Place event is to warn people of the consequences and show them the array of vehicles and technology at hand to beat the cheats.

”It pays to bear in mind that it can cost as much as £490 to retrieve your car once it has been impounded,” underlined Car Clear Co-ordinator Graham Carpenter

”At the Market Place we will be showing the kind of weapons at our disposal. These include the DVLA’s automatic number plate recognition van which will be demonstrating just how its technology catches car tax cheats.

“Then DLH will be creating the ultimate fate of the untaxed car - its mobile car crusher will be reducing vehicles to a metal cube!”

Alternatively, for the law abiding motorist the police will be giving advice on ways to prevent car crime.

“The problem with untaxed cars is that they often don’t have a MOT either, so they could be potentially dangerous,” added Graham.

“We would advise anyone who thinks that they can evade paying the road fund tax that it isn’t worth the risk. From October our powers will be extended to off-road areas including supermarket, council and resident’s car parks.”

The free-entry event will be running from 10am to 4pm.

Anyone wanting to report a untaxed vehicle can contact Graham Carpenter on 01493 333371.
