Remembering Victims of the Holocaust
The public is invited to attend a memorial service in memory of victims of the Holocaust.
Canon Michael Woods will be leading a service and wreath laying ceremony at Blackfriars Cemetery on Sunday 27 January at 11.45 am to mark Holocaust Memorial Day.
Since 1999 communities have remembered the estimated 1.5 million people who perished in Auschwitz and its satellite camps during World War ll.
The Mayor who will be laying a wreath on behalf of the Borough Council spoke about the importance of remembering those who died. “This is an occasion to reflect on the horrors of Eastern Europe and reminds us all of those who suffered. It also brings to mind our Armed Forces at this very poignant time.”
Alongside the Jewish community other victims who suffered at the hands of the Nazis included: gypsies, black people and the disabled.
Should you prefer to pay your respects in private, there is a further Jewish cemetery in the Borough at Kitchener Road.
