Compulsory Purchase Order assists the development of Outer Harbour
On the 8th of April Great Yarmouth Borough Council made a very significant compulsory purchase order affecting the Tank and Tents Site, an open piece of land in south Yarmouth, between South Denes Road and South Beach Parade.
The Council is supporting EastPort UK in their ambitious expansion plans for Great Yarmouth. The Port Company currently leases this strategically important site, and wishes to buy it for long-term security, but an agreement on price has not been reached with the site’s owners. By making this compulsory purchase order, the Council will be able to acquire the land, and then transfer it to EastPort UK.
This compulsory purchase order will safeguard the future of this important piece of land for the multi million pound Outer Harbour development. Work is well underway on construction of the harbour itself, due for completion next year, bringing investment and jobs to GreatYarmouth.
The Government believes that compulsory purchase powers “are an important tool … to use as a means of assembling the land needed to help deliver social and economic change” (ODPM Circular 06/2004, page 3). It encourages Councils and other bodies with these powers to use them “pro-actively wherever appropriate to ensure real gains are brought to residents and the business community without delay”(ODPM Circular 06/2004, page 3).
