St George and the Dragon are 'Unveiled' on St George's Day in St George's Park
The ‘unveiling’ of a statue of St George grappling with the dragon is the high spot of St George’s day celebrations in Great Yarmouth.
The wood carving stands near the new children’s play area which is part of the regeneration work being carried out in the park.
The Mayor, Paul Garrod, will be cutting a ribbon at 2pm. The celebrations will include songs by children from St George’s First School choir who will travel to the park on the seafront’s road train.
BBC Radio Norfolk’s reporter Tony Mallion will be entertaining the children with extracts from Cantley The Sugar Dragon at the Circus. A book about a dragon who lives in Great Yarmouth and written by local author David Stannard.
All children taking part in the ceremony will receive a copy of the book. These include the top four entrants in a competition to design the flooring of the play area Charlotte and Leanne Delay, and Sophie and Charlie Gates.
“The children all had such good imaginations that in the end we had to go for something a little simpler than their designs,” explained Regeneration Officer Jools Tinsley.
“But we particularly wanted the creators of the best entries to take part.”
The wood carving is by local artist Mark Goldsworthy, known as the wood carver of Bungay, who trained at Great Yarmouth Art School, in the early 1980s.
The Mayor will also be running the flag of St George and the King John Charter 800th celebration banner up new flag poles outside the Town Hall at 1.30pm before leaving for the park.
“Please come and help us celebrate St George’s Day," added Jools. “What better day or way is there to mark our national day!”
