Councillors behaving badly

Great Yarmouth Borough Council is looking for two honest and upright citizens to sit in judgement of its council members.

High standards of conduct are expected from our borough and parish councillors. They must all comply with a mandatory Code of Conduct.  Breach can lead to suspension or disqualification. The Borough Council’s Standards Committee is responsible for ensuring that local council members comply with the Code and maintain the highest levels of integrity. It deals with complaints that the Code has been broken and determines what action should be taken as a result. The Committee is made up of borough and parish councillors and three independent members.

The Standard’s Committee currently has two vacancies for independent members, and applications are being sought for these important posts.

ChrisSkinner, the Borough Council’s Monitoring Officer, says: “Being an independent member is an important and interest role. Sitting in judgment on councillors can appear daunting, but it is rewarding to know that you are helping to maintain the integrity of local Government.

“Independent members have to attend about eight meetings a year and whilst they receive no payment, travelling expenses are paid.”

The closing date for applicants is Friday, September 5.

Application packs for the vacancies can be obtained from Chris Skinner, Head of Central Services and Monitoring Officer, at the Town Hall  Tel:01493846314 and email: cfs@great-yarmouth.gov.uk.

For further information contact Head of Central Services and Monitoring Officer. Chris Skinner on 01493 846314.
