Great Yarmouth hosts Street Athletics hunt for raw talent

Friday 4 July sees Darren Campbell and Linford Christie arrive at Marine Parade, Great Yarmouth to host the only Street Athletics event to take place in the East of England. Street Athletics events are touring the country searching for raw athletic talent.  From 4pm, young potential athletes can come to the Sealife Gardens to register their interest in taking part. Heats will take place from 5pm -7pm when young people will run along a specially cordoned off area of the esplanade divided into male and female groups. Heats for under 13’s, under 15’s, under 17’s and under 20 age ranges will be held. All runners will receive a Reebok Street Athletics t-shirt and Street Athletics Dogtags.

The fastest runners will be invited to a special coaching event hosted by Katherine Merry (Women’s 400m Sydney 2000 bronze medal winner) and a top London coach on Monday 14 July to take place at the Wellesley Recreation Ground. The two fastest runners from each age group will go on to compete at a National Final event in Manchester on 20 September when a year’s kit contract with Reebok will be up for grabs. Great Yarmouth and District Athletics club (GYDAC) will be present at all events and will work with John Pamplin, Sports Development officer at Great Yarmouth Borough Council, to support aspiring athletes and nurture new talent.

Street Athletics events are run by Nuff Respect, an organisation set up by Linford Christie to identify raw athletic talent in deprived urban areas. It specialises in working closely with UK and International sportsmen and women to help them achieve their individual goals and those of their sponsors.
