Flytippers Prosecuted by the Council

The Council’s policy of ‘Catch and Convict’ in respect of those residents who continue to illegally dump waste has scored another success.

At Great Yarmouth Magistrates Court on 9th May 2008, Aram Muhammad, of 19 Ordnance Road Great Yarmouth pleaded guilty to flytipping and was ordered to pay £115 in fines and costs.

Glenn Buck, Community Protection Manager with the Council said: “This is another success in the ongoing war against flytipping in the borough. Flytipping is a major cause of public concern and costs the Council thousands of pounds each year to remove.

“In 2006/07 the Borough Council dealt with 2,886 incidents classified as flytipping which cost £195,619 in investigation and removal costs.

“Whilst we are disappointed at the level of the fine, it does send out a clear message to people that if you flytip and the Council has sufficient evidence, formal action will result.”

Miguel Fish Environmental Ranger for the Council said: “I was called by local residents after Mr Muhammad was seen to dump an old bath on Newcastle Road at the rear of Ordnance Road.

“It has cost him more than £100 when GYB Services and other licensed waste companies will collect bulky items at a reasonable price. Residents can always take extra waste to the tip at Caister free of charge.

“We gained this conviction through the help of the public, please let us know when you see this kind of thing happening and we will endeavour to take the culprit to court.”
