Wellington Pier Steel Frame Refurbishment
PR253
For Immediate Release
20 September 2006
Great Yarmouth’s Wellington Pier is about to undergo the next phase of its refurbishment with the dismantling of the existing steel frame.
A crane is due to arrive on site on Wednesday September 20, where it will be assembled on the beach and then tracked down to the pier. Work will then begin to take down the steel frame which is to be taken from the site and refurbished by a local engineer, who is working for Felixstowe based Family Amusements which leases the pier from Great Yarmouth Borough Council.
The dismantling work is estimated to last two weeks, weather permitting. Another two to three weeks will see pier decking also removed to enable the Borough Council to refurbish the substructure over the winter.
While the dismantling work is being undertaken the esplanade on either side of the pier will be closed for short periods for health and safety reasons.
In the spring the refurbished substructure will be handed over to Family Amusements so that development work on the pier can begin.
When refurbishment work is completed the pier will become a family centre with bowling alleys, bars and restaurants.
