Great Yarmouth Flood Victims Warned about Pollution in Children's Toys

PR260

For Immediate Release

26 September 2006

John Hemsworth Head of Environment and Health for Great Yarmouth Borough Council has issued a reminder to parents whose homes were flooded on Monday – don’t give your children toys which have become polluted!

“Things that were in the water and were salvageable need to be scrubbed thoroughly in hot water with lots of detergent, and disinfected according to manufacturer’s instructions,” he said.

“But it is so easy to forget children’s toys in the aftermath of incidents like the flooding on Monday. If you can’t clean them then throw them away, no matter how big a favourite they are, it is better than making a child ill through contamination on the toy.

“Everyone also needs to be very careful about handwashing. Lots of hot water and soap, give nails a scrub – all the things people would normally do before preparing food.

“We just want people to be extremely careful and avoid even more problems.”

If the public need information on public health issues they can call the Environmental Health customer service line on 01493 846478.

For further information call Head of Environment and Health John Hemsworth on 01493 846458.
