Helpful Tips to Cope with High Tides

For immediate release

PR 243

5 September 2006

The Press and media have been reporting recently on the flooding experienced in Great Yarmouth caused by heavy downpours, and the likelihood of tidal flooding in September.

There is no evidence, to-date, that the tide will cause the river to overflow its banks. However, there is a need to be prepared in the event that the weather changes in such a way that it adds to the water levels.

John Hemsworth Head of Environment and Health at Great Yarmouth Borough Council and colleagues have met with officers from the Police, Fire Service, Environment Agency, Ambulance Service and County Council to ensure plans are in place.

John has also compiled a list of tips that could help residents to be better prepared should there be flooding.

What do you need to do is:-

  • Ensure you have a plan should it be necessary for you to leave your house.

  • Can you make your own arrangements to stay with friends or family or will you need to go to a rest centre?

  • Ensure your building and contents insurances are up to date and you know where the papers are - and the telephone numbers, including your insurer, to phone to get help.

  • Make sure your personal papers, passports, birth and marriage certificates and special photographs are stored safely as high as they can be placed.

  • Make sure you turn your battery-powered radio to a local station – this is how we’ll keep you informed.

  • If you hear the siren - this is not a warning. It means that the situation is severe – listen to the radio and follow advice from the emergency services.

  • Put a few things together – a personal wash kit, medicines and tablets, mobile phone and torch – wear appropriate easy-dress clothes.

  • What about your pets?

  • When you leave lock your doors and windows and keep your keys and credit cards with you.

  • Remember listen to a local radio station to keep informed.

The Emergency Services will be going all they can to help to prioritise those in the greatest need.

The Environment Agency Floodline 0845 988 1188 will provide information on what to do in connection with flooding, or go to www.environment-agency.gov.uk.
