Planning for the Next Generation
Great Yarmouth Play Strategy 2006-2012

The Borough Council’s Play Strategy was adopted in October 2006, 18 months after the project was first started. The Strategy is based on the findings of the Borough wide consultation which was undertaken during Spring 2005.

It has become evident from this consultation that there is a changing level of aspiration amongst the residents of Great Yarmouth; not only for a better standard of play provision, but more particularly, for the improvement of play facilities suitable for the use of teenagers. Results from this consultation, alongside national best practice have fed directly into The Play Strategy and its subsequent work plan

Central Government is now recognising the need to make better provision for children’s play. Most significantly, the enjoyment of ‘recreation’, including play, is one of the key outcomes for children that authorities are required to consider in drawing up co-ordinated children and young people’s plans under the Children Act 2004.

This national recognition of the importance of play is perhaps best demonstrated by the new Big Lottery Fund “Children’s Play”. All local authorities wishing to access these funds must have a Play Strategy in order to apply. Great Yarmouth Borough Council submitted its application at the end of 2006, and we will find out this summer whether or not we have been successful.
