Marina Centre Chemical Spill - 24 September 2008

Following a routine chemical delivery at the Marina Centre a small spill of chemical resulted in a full evacuation of the Marina Centre. The evacuation took place at just after 9am this morning. This was to ensure the small chemical spill was contained and that there was no danger to staff or customer.

The Centre’s safety procedures were followed in a controlled evacuation of around 40 – 50 members of staff and customers from the building. The chemical spill was contained within a bunded area in the outdoor chemical store. The chemical spill was treated as a major incident ensuring that public safety was not breached in anyway. Once the Emergency Services had ascertained the extent of the spill they stood down and allowed the chemical spill to be dealt with by the chemical delivery company and the centre was reopened by 12.15pm.

Wayne Nixon General Manager said “We take this type of emergence very seriously and I’m happy in which the staff dealt with the situation and followed their evacuation training. We do have set procedures in place for this type of situation and will ensure a full review is conducted to ensure this type of situation is not repeated.”

The Marina Centre internal operations were not affected and the swimming pool and other facilities are open as normal.
