Watching cars being crushed on Great Yarmouth Market Place obviously wasn’t a big enough deterrent for seven vehicle owners who have had their cars removed from the streets for being tax dodgers.
The display by Great Yarmouth Borough Council’s Car Clear Partnership on September 4 showed the dire consequences of not displaying a valid road fund licence disc.
The Partnership has the powers to remove cars from the streets. Despite the graphic nature of the demonstration an inspection in the south Yarmouth area over two days saw the seven vehicles removed.
It costs transgressors £80 for the first 24 hours a car is held, and £160 after 24 hours. After that there is an additional £15 per day, plus a surety fee of £120 which is returnable on production of a valid tax disc.
“We will be targeting areas of the borough to find offenders,” said Car Clear Co-ordinator Graham Carpenter. “We also respond to information from members of the public who highlight where cars have been abandoned, or are not displaying tax discs.
“The problem with untaxed cars is that they are often also not insured or don’t have an MOT - which means they could be potentially unroadworthy.
“Reclaiming a car is not cheap - it would be far more sensible if people bought the tax disc in the first place.”
