Trees planted along Pasteur Road this week are the latest step in giving the road a smarter and greener image.
A team from GYB Services, which works with the Council, planted 12 London Plane trees on the central reservation - the area which over the last two years has been planted with 200,000 crocuses.
“London Planes were selected as they are a pollution tolerant species,” explained Tree and Landscape Officer Patrick Tabor. “Fumes from passing traffic is absorbed by the bark which the tree then sheds.
“The planting took a team of five two days as the trees are approximately 20 feet tall. They were underpinned with stakes which remain wholly underground - not an easy job when the ground was like concrete.
“We have had many comments on how the crocuses have brightened the road, the trees will also play their part in making it more attractive.”
" These trees will greatly enhance the appearance of what is one of the main entrances to the town and are indicative of the Councils commitment to make the Borough a greener place for the benefit of residents and visitors alike," said Councillor Shrimplin Cabinet Member (Environment).
