HRH The Princess Royal is to visit Great Yarmouth in June to help celebrate the Borough’s 800th Charter anniversary.

The Princess will unveil a plaque at St Nicholas Church as part of the town’s year-long commemoration of the historic event which saw King John grant the status of a ‘free borough forever’.

The Royal visit, on June 9, will be preceeded by three days of celebrations in the market place with street entertainment including jugglers, minstrels and games to play such as apple dunking and even ‘transgressors’ to pelt in the stocks.

“We hope that many of the market traders will be dressing in medieval costume, and we are asking shopkeepers around the town centre to decorate their premises to celebrate the Royal visit,” said Mayoral Civic Events Officer, Laura Goodman.

“Princess Ann will attend a service at St Nicholas Church before she unveils the plaque, and then visit the Town Hall.”

The plaque, to commemorate the 800th anniversary, is being created by local stone mason Colin Smith.

For further information contact Mayoral Civic Events Officer, Laura Goodman, on 01493 846125. More details of HRH The Princess Royal’s visit and events will be made available nearer to June 9.
