Elections in Great Yarmouth

This service is located in the Member and Legal Services Department, where elections staff are responsible for the conduct of all District and Parish Council, County, Parliamentary, European elections and Referendums.

You can only vote at elections if you are registered to vote.  Please refer to the section on electoral registration for more details on the electoral register.

Great Yarmouth Borough Council

The Borough Council holds elections of a third of its members each year. The Borough is divided into 17 electoral wards and there are 39 borough councillors representing the 17 wards.

Norfolk County Council

Norfolk County Council has 84 councillors elected from the County to make decisions about county-wide decisions (such as education and social services).  There are 9 county councillors who represent the Great Yarmouth area. These councillors serve for a period of four years. Elections are held on the first Thursday in May and the next election will be held in 2009.

Parliament

The Borough Council organises the elections for the Great Yarmouth parliamentary constituency.  The constituency of Great Yarmouth covers the same area as the Borough boundary. There is one Member of Parliament that represents this Constituency.

Parliamentary elections are held on a date decided by the Prime Minister, which must be within 5 years of the last general election. The last general election was held on 5 May, 2005.

European Parliament

The Council also organises the European Parliamentary election in the Great Yarmouth Borough Council area. There are nine electoral regions in England and the Borough falls within the Eastern Region.  There are eight Members of European Parliament representing the Eastern Region.

European Parliament elections are held every 5 years on a date fixed by the European Parliament.

Referendums

A referendum is a vote on a question about a particular issue or policy. It means that the public can make a direct decision on a question rather than letting their elected representatives decide on their behalf.
