If we are to invest in the creation of play spaces that are relevant now and have a chance of still being relevant in the future, we must understand what our children need. Children and young people must be consulted on what facilities they want. Adults can have a point of view that effectively prevents them from fully understanding the present needs of young people. The 2001 census showed that there were 10,137 people aged 10-18 in the Borough. 6,825 were then official ‘teenagers’. All children and young adults are valued members of our community.
For decades proposals for skating and climbing facilities were ignored or declined because these were thought to be fad pursuits. No one can think these are fads now. Indeed Great Yarmouth Borough Council has recognised this in its provision of 7 skate-parks across the Borough, 12 Multi Use Games Areas (MUGAs) and 3 climbing walls.
The following is a list of Youth Facilities currently maintained and under the control of Great Yarmouth Borough Council:

In Spring 2005 the Council undertook a Borough wide consultation of young people to find out what they would like to see provided for them in Great Yarmouth and what the current problems were:
75% said there was a lack of facilities for teenagers.
57% said vandalism was a big issue.
75% wanted to see more Sports Courts (MUGAs)
61% wanted outdoor fitness equipment.
59% would like climbing walls
94% said they would like to see this type of equipment in their area.
80% said boredom was the main reason anti-social behaviour occurs.
There is a definite and urgent demand for the installation of teenage play and sport facilities. This installation has become a priority for any future work programme.
“The young people of today love luxury. They have bad manners, they scoff at authority and lack respect for their elders. Children nowadays are real tyrants, they no longer stand up when their elders come in the room where they are sitting, they contradict their parents, chat together in the presence of adults, eat gluttonously and tyrannise their teachers” Socrates 300BC
