Beach huts to be removed ahead of Great Yarmouth Winter Gardens restoration work

As part of the ambitious regeneration of Great Yarmouth's iconic Winter Gardens a number of disused beach huts are being removed as a site compound is created and access improved for the construction works due to begin later this year.

A number of beach huts are to be removed as part of the wider works for the restoration of the Winter Gardens in Great Yarmouth

The 18 huts - between Wellington Pier and the Winter Gardens - were previously leased to the Beach House Café, but were taken back into council ownership last year, in anticipation of the work at the Winter Gardens.

Councillor Graham Plant, Great Yarmouth Borough Council's portfolio holder for Operational Property and Asset Management, said: ''They are right next to the site of the contractor's compound, although we did consider a range of possible options for the future of these huts.

''However, they are smaller than more modern huts and are in a very poor condition. Refurbishing and relocating them would simply not be cost effective. And there is no amenity block with the Beach House Café closed while the Winter Gardens works take place.''

The council now aims to begin removing the huts later this month which means the site will be clear for improved access for the Winter Gardens restoration.

The area will then be re-developed as part of the project, with plans for new, bigger beach huts and an amenity block in the future.
