New CCTV cameras installed in Great Yarmouth to help cut anti-social behaviour

The cameras have now been installed in areas known to experience issues of anti-social behaviour with the aim of increasing the public's feeling of safety by deterring such activities.

The locations of the CCTV cameras are:

• Sandown Road
• North Denes Road
• Escourt Road
• Kitchener Road 
• North Drive
• Northgate Street
• Wellesley Recreation Ground.

Back in August 2021, residents, businesses, community groups and sports clubs were invited to take part in an online survey asking for their feedback on the impact CCTV cameras could have on the proposed areas. Questionnaires were also delivered by the council's Covid Marshalls to all properties in the vicinity of the proposed cameras. In total, nearly 120 responses were received.

The cameras will be monitored 24 hours a day, 365 days a year by Community Safety (Great Yarmouth) Ltd who currently monitors other CCTV in the area.

Cllr Carl Smith, leader of Great Yarmouth Borough Council said: "The safety of our residents and visitors is a priority for us, so we are grateful for the funding from Safer Streets Fund to help people in the borough feel safer on our streets. We've chosen to place them in areas where we currently experience some issues and hope they will make a difference in preventing unwanted behaviours."

Sergeant Daniel Smith of Norfolk Constabulary said: "We're really pleased that Safer Streets Funding has given us and our partners in Great Yarmouth Borough Council the opportunity to ask the public what they want and take direct action as a result.

"The installation of these cameras will extend the reach of CCTV across Yarmouth, allowing residents and businesses to feel safer, along with the added protection of a significant historic sporting site."

Ron Hanton, the Chairman of Community Safety (Great Yarmouth Ltd.) said: "Our CCTV Control Room is staffed 24 hours a day, seven days a week and is operational all year round. As well as having direct links with the Police, the CCTV operators also operate radio links for the town centre, the seafront, and the late-night licensed premises. These additional cameras will be extremely beneficial in extending our coverage and for further reducing crime and disorder."

"Through three rounds of this fund we have invested £70 million into local authorities and police forces across the UK as part of our priority to make the streets safer for everyone.
