Street naming and numbering

The Council is responsible for:

• officially naming new streets
• allocating official property numbers to all new properties
• renumbering existing properties
• renaming properties and streets
• making sure Royal Mail is told about new or amended property addresses, so it can assign postcodes

UPDATE (Tuesday 3 June 2025)

The Council is notifying street naming and numbering applicants that Royal Mail has recently installed a new IT software system.  Unfortunately, as a result, they are experiencing delays in responding to applications. This means that applications will take longer for the Council to process (than the usual turn around within 21 working days).

Please accept our apologies for any problems this may cause, but be assured that we will attend your application as quickly as possible.

• the repair and maintenance of street nameplates
