Renting a Council garage

Introduction

We have a number of Council garages available for let across the Borough.

How do I apply for a Council garage?

Please complete our online garage application form to apply for a garage or enter the waiting list until a garage becomes available. The form gives information of the areas and tells you where we have garages to rent.

We are currently holding a waiting list for garages. Please complete the online application form and we will be in touch when we have a vacancy in your chosen area.

How much is a Council garage?

Prices vary according to location and who rents the garage:

  • leaseholders pay 12.98 per week (VAT charges do not apply to garages rented under leaseholder arrangements)
  • non-Council tenants pay £15.58 (£12.98 plus VAT of £2.60) per week

In addition, a town centre surcharge applies to garages situated in certain locations* under certain circumstances. If you are considering renting a garage in a town centre location please contact us for further clarification on surcharges.

*The town centre surcharge applies to:

  • Abyssinia Road
  • Malakoff Close
  • Middlegate
  • Patterson Close
  • The Conge
  • Yarmouth Way

Payment

Please note in all cases four weeks advance payment will be required when renting a garage. You will be asked to make this payment when you sign the licence agreement and collect the keys.

If you are a Council tenant and rent a garage from us, your rent for the garage will be separate to your home account. If you go into arrears with your garage account, we will end your garage licence by giving one week's written notice. We will also consider ending your garage licence if you go into arrears with your home account, in order to sustain your tenancy. If the keys are not returned, we can change the locks when repossessing the garage.

If you are a non-Council tenant your rent should be paid four weekly in advance by Direct Debit (PDF) [96KB] (opens new window) or standing order (PDF) [83KB] (opens new window) . If you go into arrears we will give you one week's notice to terminate the garage licence.

How do I end my licence?

You can end your licence at any time by giving us one week's notice in writing, which we must receive on or before the Monday the notice period starts. When you leave, you must remove all your belongings and return your keys to us by the date your licence ends.

If you do not empty the garage, return the keys, or if we have to carry out any repairs, you will be charged for the cost of any repairs, clearing, storage or disposal of items.

What if my garage needs repairs?

Call our Housing Repairs team on 0808 264 4444 (01493 330369 for out of hours emergencies) and tell us what is wrong with your garage and where it is. We will agree a time to visit the garage and carry out the repairs.
