Young trader markets

Introduction

Great Yarmouth Borough Council was a partner within a European-funded scheme called Go Trade. Within that project, the National Market Traders Federation (NMTF) (opens new window) is worked with local authorities to improve local markets by attracting young entrepreneurs aged between 18 and 30.

Each year the NMTF runs a national competition as part of its Young Trader Market programme. The Young Traders Market programme aims to encourage young entrepreneurs to use markets as a platform to start or grow their business. The programme starts with local young trader markets across the UK and then regional finals. At each stage the best of the best are put through and the programme culminates at the national final, where one trader will be awarded the title of National Young Trader of the Year.

Anyone, of any age, can join our market with access to FREE business support to start their business as a casual trader; if a new trader falls within the age bracket for the NMTF's programme, they would be entitled to participate as part of this competition, with access to additional support and discounts offered directly by NMTF.

What will I get on the market?

A space of 10x10 feet will be offered on the two-day market (Wednesday and Saturday) for trading.  Usual casual trader rates will be applied.

Payment in advance is required as part of the Market Application process. Two-day traders can occupy their pitch from 7am.

What will I need to trade?

As a trader you will be required to have public liability insurance of £5m coverage. This must be in place before your first day of trading.

What support is being offered?

Support from our Business Advisor will be provided free of charge to help develop a business plan and review business delivery once trading.

Initial stall set up will be provided, for example:

  • a gazebo on loan for up to two months on your chosen market days (Wednesday or Saturday)
  • access to electricity (3 pin plug), however an extension lead would be required

Advice from the NMTF will be available to help secure the appropriate insurances. The Young Trader will have the opportunity to compete in the NMTF-run Young Trader regional and national competitions.

How do I get involved?

You can contact the Business Support team to seek pre-trading advice setting up your business and insurances.
