Council appeals for information following repeated fly-tipping incidents

Great Yarmouth Borough Council is appealing for information after large quantities of waste were left at the same location for the second month in a row.

In June, a substantial amount of waste was found dumped along Hobland Road, Browston.  The waste was comprised of mainly building-type materials and included plasterboard, bags of empty silicone containers, insulation, tiles, rubble and packaging. There were more than 130 bags dumped.

Just a week later, the council received a second report of more fly tipping in the same place with similar waste.

Anyone with information about fly tipping is asked to contact the Environmental Rangers at Great Yarmouth Borough Council via 01493 846478 or health@great-yarmouth.gov.uk. As much information as possible should be provided such as the location and time of offence, what occurred, the description or address of the offender(s) and the registration number of any vehicle involved.

The council is using these incidents to remind people to be aware of unlicensed waste carriers - it is the legal duty of the householder to check anyone taking waste from their home has a proper licence. Anyone who uses an illegal collector could be prosecuted and fined up to £5,000 if dumped waste can be traced back to them.

Councillor Paul Wells, Portfolio Holder for Environment and Sustainability, Licensing and Waste at Great Yarmouth Borough Council, said: "The Environmental Rangers and the wider team at the council take great pride in providing a clean, safe and well-maintained environment for all of our residents.

"These recent fly-tipping incidents are unacceptable and whoever carried out this outrageous criminal act must be held to account."

The abandonment of waste is an offence under the Environmental Protection Act and the maximum penalty is an unlimited fine and/or imprisonment.
