Great Yarmouth Borough Council improves street cleaning fleet with new vehicles

Great Yarmouth Borough Council has taken delivery of two new mechanical road sweepers to bolster its street cleansing fleet.

The state-of-the-art Boschung S2 sweepers have replaced two ageing machines at Great Yarmouth Services, the council's company which oversees waste and street cleaning.

The manufacturers recently travelled to Great Yarmouth to deliver two days of staff training on the new vehicles and they are now in operation around the borough.

The council says the new sweepers are more fuel efficient than the previous vehicles and also have cleaner engines, an increased payload and can be operated on a standard car driving licence.

Great Yarmouth Services selected the new model having had a similar one in its fleet since 2021 which has been deemed very successful.

Councillor Paul Wells, Great Yarmouth Borough Council's portfolio holder for Environment, Sustainability and Waste, said: ''We know how important street cleaning is to our residents and visitors to the borough.

''The team at Great Yarmouth Services works extremely hard and these new vehicles will help build on the work it does. The sweepers are cost effective and efficient and are a valuable new addition to the fleet as we continue to focus on delivering the highest standards of street cleaning possible.

''Of course, we always urge visitors and residents to help us by ensuring they always use the correct waste and recycling bins and never litter or fly-tip rubbish.''

Great Yarmouth Services also recently took delivery of Norfolk's first fully electric refuse collection vehicle as part of the council's Net Zero strategy.

As part of its Net Zero strategy, the borough council has also invested in new charging infrastructure, specialist tools, equipment and HGV fitter training to allow staff to safely carry out routine maintenance and repairs on the new vehicle.

As part of a trial, earlier this year the council also took delivery of two new electric vans to join the Great Yarmouth Services fleet.
