With the introduction of the Elections Act last year, for the first time, people were required to provide accepted types of Photo ID in order to cast their vote in a general election.

Sheila Oxtoby, (Acting) Returning Officer and Chief Executive of Great Yarmouth Borough Council, said: "We are very pleased the count went so smoothly today. I would like to thank all the candidates and their agents for their efforts.

''I would also like to thank the council's staff and colleagues, particularly the electoral services team and those who volunteered to help make the election run so efficiently. The organisation of elections is a huge endeavour and I am extremely grateful to everyone involved."
