Car park resurfacing set to begin in Great Yarmouth
As part of its work to improve the centre of Great Yarmouth, the borough council is to re-surface Howard Street car park and some of the spaces in the Market Place car park.
The work is being phased to make sure parking remains available and begins on Monday, May 19, to ensure it is completed ahead of the school summer holidays and peak tourism season.
Howard Street pay and display car park, at the rear of The Place, will be resurfaced in two stages, with the first phase taking place between May 19 and May 30. The second phase will be completed between June 2 and June 17. The car park will remain open throughout, but spaces will be reduced by about half to allow the work to be completed.
While the work is being carried out, clearly signed temporary entrance and exits will be in operation. Temporary disabled spaces will be available and clearly marked.
People are advised that any vehicles left in the car park on Monday, May 19, must be parked in the Phase 2 zone to avoid potential delays to work getting underway. Maps are already displayed at the car park to help drivers identify this area.
From Monday, May 19, work will also begin to replace the temporary concrete surface in the Market Place car park. This will affect about 20 bays nearest the entrance to the covered market, although about 100 spaces will remain unaffected.
At the end of the works the whole of the Market Place car park will need to close for two days (potentially a Sunday and Monday) so that what is left of the existing markings can be removed and new lines painted. This work will be completed on or around July 18, weather permitting.
Councillor Graham Plant, Great Yarmouth Borough Council's portfolio holder for Operational Property and Asset Management, said: ''The Market Place has been transformed with the opening of The Place and all the improvements such as new paving, seating and planters.
"Making Great Yarmouth vibrant and welcoming for people who live here, work here, study here and visit is crucial. We want to see a thriving, future-proofed town centre that has a strong retail, leisure and hospitality offer.
"This work needs doing and will improve the car parks for people, with safer surfaces and clearer lines. We are sorry for any inconvenience the resurfacing causes. There are a number of alternative car parks nearby and our contractors will be working to get the job done as quickly as possible."
