Great Yarmouth Borough Council's cabinet to consider sale of Gorleston's Ocean Room

Members of Great Yarmouth Borough Council's cabinet are to debate the sale of the Ocean Room following agreement in March to market the freehold of the building for sale.

GYBC's cabinet is to debate the potential sale of Gorleston's Ocean Room

A number of bids have been received for the council-owned venue after the former nightclub was put up for sale following its closure more than two years ago.

The bids have now been assessed by officers and at a meeting on September 9 the council's cabinet will decide whether or not to accept an offer for the building.

Councillor Graham Plant, GYBC's portfolio holder for Operational Property and Asset Management, said: ''There has been keen interest in the Ocean Room from potential purchasers and officers have carefully scrutinised and carried out due diligence on all of the bids.

''When cabinet considers its decision, we have a responsibility to council tax payers of the borough to ensure that best value is achieved. If a sale is agreed there will be conditions in place that mean any buyer would be required to fully engage with the community about future proposals.''

The former nightclub closed its doors when the company leasing it went into administration following non-payment of rent. It has been suggested that it could cost more than £800,000 to repair the building - including a new roof, rewiring, boiler and heating system, as well as major structural work.

Councillor Plant said: ''We are pleased the Ocean Room has attracted such interest from potential buyers. Doing nothing is not an option and no one wants to see the building further deteriorate with no viable future.''
