Great Yarmouth's two-day market to move to northern end of Market Place

Great Yarmouth's two-day market is to return to its historic site on the north side of the Market Place following the completion of major improvement works.

New paving, benches, lighting, landscaping and planters have been installed at the Market Place to create a high-quality environment designed to encourage people to spend more time in the town centre shopping, browsing and dining.

The two-day market has been based in the southern piazza section of the Market Place, but now the revamp has finished it will once more return to the northern end.

Councillor Graham Plant, Great Yarmouth Borough Council's portfolio holder for Operational Property and Asset Management, said: ''We are very pleased with the work that's been completed in the Market Place.

''We now have an attractive and modern town centre that provides a much more welcoming environment for everyone - shoppers, visitors and traders. Alongside the recently completed new library and learning hub at The Place and the covered market, we have a revitalised space that we can all take pride in and that leaves us well placed for the future.

''With the two-day market now returning to its traditional home we'd like to thank everyone for their patience while the work was carried out and would urge people to enjoy all the Market Place has to offer.''

The improvements were paid for with finance from the Government's Future High Street Fund, which aims to renew and reshape town centres and high streets in a way that drives economic growth, improves experience and ensures long-term sustainability.

The two-day market operates every week on Wednesdays and Saturdays, with a small number of traders operating on Fridays. It will move from the southern piazza, between the Lloyd's Bank building and the covered market, to the north end from Wednesday, October 1.
