People invited to attend Commonwealth flag-raising event in Great Yarmouth

Members of the public are invited to attend the raising of the Commonwealth flag outside Great Yarmouth Town Hall on Monday, March 9, as part of a national initiative to show commitment to the global family of nations.

The event is part of the annual Commonwealth Day celebrations which recognise the innovative and enduring spirit of the Commonwealth family — 56 independent member countries united by the shared values enshrined in the Commonwealth Charter.

In Great Yarmouth, the ceremony and blessings will begin at 9.50am and will be led by Revd Jassica Castillo-Burley. Councillor Carl Annison, Mayor of the Borough of Great Yarmouth, will make a short welcome and raise the flag at 10am.

Commonwealth member countries and accredited organisations will mark the day with celebratory events and observances - from civic and faith gatherings, parliamentary events, school assemblies, debates, flag-raising ceremonies, to cultural celebrations, showcasing initiatives to increase awareness of the Commonwealth's values and collective advantage.

In London, the Commonwealth Secretariat will host a reception welcoming Commonwealth Foreign Affairs Ministers and strategic partners, and the annual multi-faith service at Westminster Abbey will further demonstrate the diversity of the Commonwealth.

His Worship The Mayor, Councillor Annison, said: ''We hope people will be able to join us on March 9 for what is always an important opportunity for us to celebrate the strength of the Commonwealth and our shared values and principles, including co-operation on economic and social development, diversity, respect, friendship and the promotion of peace around the world.''

The theme of this year's event is unlocking opportunities together for a prosperous Commonwealth and highlights a commitment to facilitate the development of transformative, equitable and high-impact opportunities.

Commonwealth Secretary-General, Hon Shirley Botchwey, said "Opportunity must reach people everywhere — from the smallest, most remote communities to the biggest cities. We are a family of nations whose endowments and common values position us to deliver the extraordinary benefits of a more prosperous and connected Commonwealth, if we work together."
