Great Yarmouth Borough Council launches consultation on Local Plan modifications

Great Yarmouth Borough Council has launched a public consultation so people can provide feedback on a number of technical modifications to its new Local Plan.

The updates have been included following the public examination hearings of the borough's Local Plan by the Planning Inspectorate at the end of last year.

The majority of the proposed changes are designed to improve the effectiveness of the policy and one of the main updates inspectors recommended is to extend the life of the Local Plan by one year, so that it runs from 2024 to 2042.

Among the other revisions are technical changes to the detailed wording of policies to improve the planning application process. There is also a change to Policy OSS1 (Housing Growth and Location), which increases the overall housing requirement from 6,460 to 6,840 homes to take account of extending the Local Plan period by a year.

The consultation is a final chance for the public and stakeholders to provide input on the modifications before the Planning Inspectors conclude the examination of the Local Plan and provide their recommendations on whether the Local Plan can be adopted by the council.

The consultation runs until 5pm on April 22, 2026, and comments are invited on the modifications and minor changes to the policies map.

Feedback is also being sought on a revised Sustainability Appraisal and a Habitat Regulations Assessment on the Main Modifications. However, officers stress the consultation is not an opportunity to make or restate comments on other aspects or contents of the plan. All comments will then be passed to the Planning Inspectors.
