Summer fireworks set to light up holiday shoreline

Fireworks are set to sparkle in the skies over Great Yarmouth as the resort prepares for its summer season of weekly displays.

Next Wednesday (July 25) sees the first of a series of shows that bring in thousands of extra people to enjoy the pyrotechnics as well as seafront entertainment.

The fireworks are run by the Greater Yarmouth Tourism and Business Improvement Area, whose spokesman Alan Carr said: "The fireworks are now among our top 20 busiest days of the year, attracting mainly a family audience.

"There is a mixture of local people, holidaymakers and we even have coach parties coming for the day.

"We have been running them since 2000 and they have now become a key date in the Great Yarmouth calendar," he added.

This year's Great Yarmouth displays are being done by a different company to previously - Titanium Fireworks, one of the UK's largest fireworks companies, who also do the Cromer New Year's Day event.

Titanium have also done prestigious displays including Adele's Finale concert in Wembley Stadium, the Mayor of London's New Year's Eve display at the London Eye, Edinburgh Castle's Hogmany and the 2015 Rugby World Cup opening and closing ceremonies at Twickenham.

The Great Yarmouth displays are at 10pm for six Wednesdays with live entertainment through Heart FM on Sealife Centre Gardens from 8pm, and seafront attractions open late. They are on July 25, August 1, 8, 15, 22 and 29.

Hemsby also has weekly displays on Tuesdays running from July 24 until August 28, also at 10pm, with a different operator. They are also funded by the by GYTABIA and organised by its local traders group.

A GYTABIA survey has shown the events have a positive spin-off for a range of traders in the area. It revealed visitors spent £27 more than non-fireworks days. They visited amusement arcades, casinos, bingos, pubs, eateries and attractions. Many visitors also said the displays changed their perception of Great Yarmouth and Hemsby for the better.

More details about the events are at Tourism website - What's On in Great Yarmouth
